Costly Errors

Medical bills can be both confusing and stressful. In many cases, people are dealing with large balances, some of which may not be calculated correctly. It is important to review medical bills for accuracy before worrying about how to repay the balance.

  • First, check to make sure the bill belongs to you. There have been instances in which people get mistakenly billed for someone else’s services. Request a detailed copy of your statement to verify your debt.
  • Next, look at the services performed. If there are any services, medications or itemized expenses listed that you are unsure of, ask your doctor to confirm them. Your doctor will also be able to help you understand what certain service codes mean in relation to the charges listed.
  • Last, double check with your insurance company about your covered benefits. If your insurance company paid part or denied the charges all together, you have the right to appeal the claim with your insurance provider.
