It’s one of the most recognizable quotes in pop culture: “help control the pet population, have your pet spayed or neutered”, as requested by former TV game show host Bob Barker. It comes as no surprise that Barker loves animals and is a long-time supporter of animal rights groups. He also has donated a substantial portion of his game show earnings to animal conservation societies.
Chimps Get A Second Chance
Bob Barker donated over $200,000 to a chimpanzee sanctuary in Keithville, Louisiana last week. The donation came as a rescue effort to help save and relocate several chimps living in a bankruptcy laboratory in Texas. It may seem unusual to hear of a research lab entering bankruptcy, but considering that much of scientific research is government funded, the state of the economy isn’t discriminating among agencies. Many research labs, including pharmaceutical, cancer and disease facilities have been forced into bankruptcy through lack of funding.
As for Barker’s beloved chimps, his money will go towards transporting the animals to the new facility, paying for one year of care for the new chimps and expanding the naturalistic habitat of the grounds. He feels these animals shouldn’t have to live their lives in cages or be left behind because the laboratory couldn’t afford to keep its doors open.
The bankruptcy could be seen as a blessing in disguise, Barker said of his donation: “These chimpanzees have spent their entire lives on concrete in cages. They will now be able to climb and swing and hoot through the forest-like surroundings of Chimp Haven.
