Can Filing For Bankruptcy Hurt My Career?

In the past the question of whether or not filing for bankruptcy could impact your career would be a non-starter. Very few job postings would entail the process of a credit check. Unless you were attempting to secure a position in a bank, money management or government position that held responsibilities for the disbursement of money you would not even think about the possibility.
Unfortunately, in this age of information technology the opportunity for a potential employer to gain access to information with regard to pretty much every aspect of a person’s life is much higher than it was in the not too distant past. Social media has ensured that the doors to a person’s private life are at least cracked if not open completely.
While an employer cannot legally exclude a person from a job posting for seeking bankruptcy protection unless the position requires a clean credit record you can bet that many employers use whatever information they can find to determine if they want to choose one person over another whether it is legal or not. If you are asked by a potential employer if you have ever sought bankruptcy protection the best position to take is one of honesty. Explain that you found yourself in a difficult financial situation and decided to take proactive steps to rectify it.
If the employer decides not to hire you simply because of a decision you took that was right for you at the time ask yourself, would you really want to work for that person anyway? Seek the advice of a qualified bankruptcy attorney for any questions you may have to find out exactly where you stand legally.
